LYIT student rents lowest in Ireland

New figures show that rents for students attending the Letterkenny Institute of Technology are the cheapest in the country.

According to the latest figures from property website Daft. ie – Students renting a single room in Letterkenny will pay approximately €173 per-month.

This compares to a monthly rent of 500 in Dublin City Centre, 339 euro in Galway and 266 euro in Sligo.

Mother of student who died in Derry tells of A level sorrow

Thousands of students in the North have received the equivalent of their Leaving Cert results.

It’s a poignant day for the family of the one of the teenagers who died in the County Derry gas poisoning tragedy earlier this month.

18-year-old Aaron Davidson achieved top marks in four subjects.

His mother Katrina says they’re sad but proud he got the grades he would have needed to study engineering at Queen’s University in Belfast:
 

Over 100 pubs closing in Donegal as VFI demand government action

It’s emerged that over 100 pubs in Donegal have chosen to cease trading over the past 12 months following the publication of new figures from the Revenue Commissioners.

106 pubs in the county did not renew their licences over the past year, the third highest figure in the country after Dublin and Cork.

Publicans say the smoking ban, reductions in drink drive limits and cheap alcohol in supermarkets have all contributed to what is becoming a terminal decline for many pubs.

Martin Gibbons is VFI spokesperson in Donegal, he says there are things that could be done to help, but he’s not confident they will materialise……..

 

Huge increase in Magee College applications as A Level results are published

More than 12,000 pupils across Northern Ireland have been receiving their A level results today, with competition for university places expected to be tougher than ever this year.

All universities and colleges are reporting increassed applications, with the University of Ulster’s Magee College in Derry reporting over 6,100 applications for just 951 available places, representing a rise of 22% from 2009.

Sinn Fein MLA Martina Anderson says this makes the expansion application all the more important, and she’s already been in touch with the education minister…….

 

The shortage of university places means that inevitably, some students will not get the course they wanted, and may have to change their plans.

Boxing – McCloskey to Return To Letterkenny

Paul McCloskey will enjoy home comforts for the second defence of his European Light Welterweight title against Barry “The Bizness” Morrison on the Hunky Dorys Fight Night at The Aura in Letterkenny on Saturday, October 2nd. The unbeaten Dungiven southpaw will be returning to the scene of his victory over former World Champ Cesar Bazan in 2008 as European Championship Boxing comes to Donegal for the very first time. McCloskey is currently rated number 4 in the World by the WBC and he will be looking to press his claims for a shot at the World’s elite with the likes of Amir Khan and undefeated Americans Tim Bradley and Devon Alexander considered the marquee names in the Light Welterweight division.

In the chief supporting contest in Letterkenny unbeaten Cavan star Andy Murray faces a major step up in class in an International ten round contest and Donegal’s own Michael Mc Laughlin will make his pro debut on the night.

English Through To Youth Olympic Final

Donegal youngster Mark English (Letterkenny AC) has qualified for Sunday’s 1.000 meters final of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Mark participated in round 1 on Wednesday 18th at 10.30 AM in the Bisham stadium. The talented Donegal man who had won his Youth Olympic trial race in Moscow in May with a time of 2:24.53 took the race up from the gun leading the field through intermediate time’s of 58.74 at 400 meters and 1.57.54 at 800 meters to finish 4th in 2.25.39 and 6th fastest from the two heats with 12 fastest to qualify. Mark will participate in the final on this Sunday 22nd at 10.20 local time 3.20am Irish time.

Over €250,000 allocated for flood repairs in Gweedore

Just over 250 thousand euro has been allocated by the Office of Public works to address some of the damage caused by last years flooding in Gweedore.

The money, allocated to the Gweedore Flooding Project, will be used for a number of repair projects,  most notably to bridges damaged in the area.

Agencies meet to seek new company for Buncrana premises

Job creation agencies, local political representatives and management of the Keith Prowse call Centre will meet today to discuss how best to attract a new company to the premises.

The Centre in Buncrana closed last weekend with the loss of 100 jobs.

Some staff have still to receive their outstanding wages while FAS being accused of foot dragging in meeting with the centre’s former workers.

Speaking ahead of today’s meeting Joe McHugh of the IDA says every effort will be made to find an alternative employer:

 

Australian students learning Irish in Glencolmcille

15 Australian students have travelled half way across the world to study Irish in Donegal.

Classes and summer schools are held regularly in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra but this year, for the first time, 15 enthusiasts are spending a fortnight in Glencolmcille attending classes with Oideas Gael.

One of them is Barney Devlin, originally from Ireland but now living in Australia – he says the Donegal visit has come of the back of years of planning:

 

Donegal LC student secures 600 points

As analysis and assessment of Leaving Cert results continues today, one Donegal student is celebrating the maximum 600 points this afternoon. Sinead Brennan, a student at Loreto Convent in Letterkenny received six A1s and a B in maths.

She intends to study medicine, probably in the UK……..
