2nd home tax income exceeds expectations

Latest figures show that 4.9 million euro has been collected so far through the second property tax in Donegal.

This is the 7th highest collection rate in the country.

In total 120 million euro has been raised across the country, the largest amount, 22.5 million euro in Dublin.

There is speculation that the government will increase the tax in Decembers budget.

Donegal’s hopes of back to back  All Ireland Minor crowns came crashing down on Saturday afternoon in Ballinmore, Co. Leitrim following a four point defeat to the Connacht side. Galway scored the opening goal of the game early in the first half and after that Donegal found it difficult to close the gap. Towards the end it increased to seven points but a Ciara Grant goal in the last minute left the final score 1-15 to 1-11. Geraldine Mc Laughlin scored 0-10  of  Donegal’s total.

Derry City continue to hold a commanding position at the top of the First Division, moving twelve points clear of the chasing pack with their fifteenth win at the Brandywell. Thomas McBride scored for the third consecutive game but City struggled to dispatch a dogged Salthill Devon side.  The Candystripes struck after 25 minutes and whilst many expected the home side to push on from there, it was not to be on a frustrating night.

Finn Harps suffered their ninth defeat of the season on Friday Night at Turners cross going down to Cork City by two goals to one. The Donegal club who started new signings goalkeeper Gavin Cullen and midfielder Tony Shields were two down five minutes into the second half. Harps did pull a goal back through Mark Brolly on sixty five minutes but failed to push for an equalizer after that.

Harps manager James Gallagher said it was a difficult night given the long round trip to Cork and back….
 

Baby dies in ‘tragic accident’

A 13 month old toddler has died after being struck by a car in Letterkenny.

13 month old baby Lisa Gallagher was fatally injured when she was struck by a reversing car in the driveway of the family home at Drumardagh in Letterkenny. It’s understood the car was being driven by a family member.

Gardai are investigating, but say it was a tragic accident.

Dungloe Festival kicks off today

The ten day Dungloe festival gets underway today, culminating in the Mary from Dungloe pageant.

Thousands of people are expected to visit the area for the duration of the festival.

Spokesperson for Failte Ireland Sheena Doyle says visitors can expect a lot of fun..

Donegal Mayor sceptical about proposed Local Government savings

The mayor of Donegal says some of the proposals in a new document recommending reform of county and city councils fly in the face of what Donegal County Counil is trying to achieve.

The Local Government Efficiency Review Group’s report is seeking savings of half a billion euro.

One recommendation suggests that the number of city and county managers be cut by ten. If adopted, Donegal would not be affected, but Sligo and leitrim would have to share a manager.

Another proposal to impose tolls on new and existing National Roads is causing controversry, with AA roadwatch among the bodies criticising it.

The Mayor of Donegal Cllr Cora Harvey says the emphasis locally has been on ensuring that services are provided to as many people as possible, but these recommendations fly in the face of that commitment……..

Extra funding for Letterkenny relief road

An extra €50,000 is being provided by the National Roads Authority for works on the proposed Bonagee link section of the Letterkenny Relief Road.

It’s now hoped that a specialist ground investigation project can begin next month.

Welcoming the allocation, Cllr Ciaran Brogan said it’s an important statement of commitment to the relief road at a time when speculation is focussed on projects being abandoned or postponed……

 

Inishowen councillors meet labour minister

Arrangements are being made for a meeting of Inishowen Councillors and development agencies to discuss how to attract more investment into the peninsula.

It follows a meeting this week between councillors and Labour Affairs Minister Dara Colleary, who viosited the Public Services Centre in Carndonagh for discussions on what’s needed in the area.

The MInister promised to convene a comprehensive meeting to discuss the options with the agencies and others.
