Athletics – European Cup Win For Smyth

The highlight of the European Cup meet in Budapest Hungary on Saturday was City of Derry’s, Jason Smyth’s blistering victory in the 100m. The Commonwealth Games bound sprinter from Eglinton bettered his own Northern Ireland 100m record with a time of 10.27. Smyth continued his superb recent form by winning the race ahead of Portugal’s Francis Obikwelu. His time was 0.05 seconds quicker than his previous best, set last weekend in the NI Championships.

Man critical following hotel window fall

A man has been seriously injured following a fall from a Donegal Town hotel.

The youth, thought to be from Northern Ireland fell from a 3rd floor window of the Abbey Hotel.

He is currently receiving treatment in Letterkenny General Hospial were he is being described as critical

Memorial service held for dead rally driver

Officials from the Donegal International Rally are attending a memorial service on Sunday afternoon following the death of one of their competitors yesterday.

Thomas Maguire was co-driving a car which crashed during a race yesterday afternoon.

Mr Maguire from Longwood, Co Meath, was a co-driver in a car which crashed on a bad bend between Fanad and Ramelton,  Co Donegal, at around 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were at the scene within minutes but they were unable to save him.

The driver of the car was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where he is in a critical condition.

Donegal Motor Club says it deeply regrets the incident and in light of the tragic events and as a mark of respect to the Maguire family, the remainder of this year’s Rally has been cancelled.

Competitors and club officials are attending a memorial service for Thomas at the Mount Errigal Hotel today.

Rally cancelled as mark of respect to dead co-driver

The Donegal Motor Club has confirmed the Donegal International Rally has been cancelled following the death of a competitor. Thomas Maguire, of Longwood Co. Meath died in a crash between Fanad and Ramelton this evening. The driver of the car is in a critical condition at Letterkenny General Hospital.

A service for Thomas Maguire will be held at Rally headquarters in the Mount Errigal Hotel tomorrow (Sunday) morning at 11am.

Donegal Rally – Day 3 Cancelled

The Donegal Motor Club has expressed its deep regret at the death of a competitor in this year’s Rally. Thomas Maguire, of Longwood County Meath, died when the car he was co-driving, went off the road during the Knockalla Stage south of Port Salon just after 3pm this afternoon.The driver of the car is in a critical condition at Letterkenny General Hospital. The Rally’s emergency services and the rescue services attended the scene within minutes.
In a statement the Donegal Motor Club said that in light of today’s tragic events and as a mark of respect to the Maguire family, the remainder of this year’s Rally would be cancelled. Clerk of the Course Danny Gormley, said he and everyone in the Donegal Motor Club would like to convey their deepest sympathy to the Maguire family and to all of Thomas’s many many friends
‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the Maguire family and the family of the competitor who was injured at this very difficult time. Thomas loved rallying and his loss has deeply affected everyone involved in the Rally. His loss will be felt by rallying fans all over the country. It was the view of everyone in the DMC that the remainder of this year’s Rally should be cancelled as a mark of respect ‘ Gormley said.

Co-driver killed during Donegal International Rally

A man in his 30s has been killed in a crash at the Donegal International car rally.

He was the co-driver of a car that crashed on a bend between Fanad and Ramelton this afternoon.

The event has been suspended and a decision will be made this evening if it will resume tomorrow.

This is the first time a competitor has been killed in the rally.

An incident has occurred on SS11 of the Donegal International Rally this afternoon. Senior Event Officials and the Rescue Services are on the scene. The remainder of today’s competition has been suspended. A further statement will be issued in due course.

Donegal International Rally suspended following serious crash

The Donegal Motor club has confirmed that competition has been suspended for the rest of Saturday after what is being described as a serious incident.

It is understood a man suffered serious injuries when the rally car in which he was in crashed  during stage 12 of the competition.

Emergency services are at the scene as are senior rally officials.

A further statement on the incident is expected later. A decision on whether the rally will continue tomorrow is also expected later.

Deputy McHugh to seek compensation for Foyle fishermen

Donegal Fine Gael Deputy Joe McHugh is to challenge to Taoiseach directly on a government decision not to compensate banned from fishing in Lough Foyle.

Early this month the Loughs Agency banned salmon fishing on Lough Foyle in 2010 for conservation purposes

Deputy McHugh says the decision not to compensate the 28 fishermen for loss of earnings is deeply unfair.

Safety measures for Letterkenny road

It’s anticipated that work on new safety measures for the Circular Road in Letterkenny will get underway within the next five weeks.

Cllrs Gerry Mc Monagle and Jimmy Kavanagh have both been highlighting the increased levels of traffic on the road, and now it’s been confirmed that the recent “LUTS” Land Usage and Transportation Study has backed up their position.

Cllr Mc Monagle says that officials have now acted to assess the safety of the road, and measures are to be put in place shortly
