Saville report to be published on June 15th

The long-awaited report on the Bloody Sunday killings in Co. Derry will be published in just over a fortnights time.

14 people died after soldiers from the British Parachute Regiment opened fire on crowds during a civil rights demonstration on January the 30th, 1972.

Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness says the British Prime Minister has kept his word to swiftly publish the document…………..

 

Their relatives of the dead and those who were injured will be given a chance to review the Saville Report before it is published.

Families’ spokesperson John Kelly has been outlining how the day will unfold, with their lawyers and certain family members getting a chance to pre-read the report before it’s published that afternoon…………..

 

No decision on community hospitals – HSE

Meanwhile, the HSE says that no decisions have been taken on the future of Community Hospitals in Donegal, with fears that the Ropck and Shiel Hospitals in Ballyshannon are at risk of closure.

The issue was raised by Donegal representitives at a meeting of the HSE’s regional health forum in Galway this week.

One of them, Cllr Frank Mc Brearty says he was told that the situation was still under review. It’s an answer he says is totally unacceptable, particularly in light of the rally which took place in Lifford at the weekend…..

 

Donegal v Down Preview Part 2


Donegal are seeking a first win in the opening round of the Ulster Senior Championship since 2007. That year Donegal beat Armagh by a point in Ballybofey. In 2008 Donegal lost to Derry and last year Antrim caused an upset taking victory in Ballybofey.

Bloody Sunday report given June 15th release date

The long-awaited report on the Bloody Sunday killings in Co Derry will be published on June the 15th.

14 people died after soldiers from the British Parachute Regiment opened fire on crowds during a civil rights demonstration on January the 30th, 1972.

Reporter Mark White the Saville enquiry has taken a very long time.

“12 years in the making, Lord Saville sat for 434 days in total, called about 900 witnesses and it cost – it’s being estimated – about 200 million pounds” he said.

Repair works are to begin in the coming weeks on the N56, Glenties

Repair works are to begin in the coming weeks on the N56, the main road in the Glenties electoral area. The road was badly damaged in places due to the frost during the winter.

It was annouced at the Committee meeting for the Glenties electoral area yesterday that 525,000 euro has been allocated for repairs.

The road will be resurfaced in the next few weeks.

Local Councillor Seamus O Domhnaill welcomed the funding, and he says the N56 was especially badly damaged around the Ards Forest Park area.

 

Councillor Mick Quinn blasts use of “Habitual Residency” rules.

People locally are being treated unfairly twhen applying for Job seekers allowance, according to local Councillor Mick Quinn.

He has attacked the manner in which the rules governing  the use of habitual residency are being used by the Department of Social and Family affairs to determine someones entitlement to sign on.

Councillor Quinn, says its especially hard for someone who has left the county for a period and then returned.

For eaxmple, someone who was studying in England, finished their course, and now returned home, could find it extremely difficult to sign-on if they cant find employment.

 

Fianna Fail Councillor says there will be ‘murder’ if Town Councils are scrapped

A Fianna Fail County Councillor has said there will be murder, metaphorically speaking, if the government go ahead with reported plans to scrap town councils.

Sean McEniff, who also sits on Bundoran Town Council was responding to news that town councillors are to be ditched in a radical shake-up of local government planned by Fianna Fail.

Under the plan, one set of councillors will represent their area at town and county level.

Councillor McEniff says he and his party colleagues in Donegal will fight the scrapping town councils ‘tooth and nail’ :

This Sunday the 30th May Donegal play Down in the Quarter Final of the Ulster Senior Football Championship.

Conall Dunne in 2010 will be tackling his sixth championship campaign. The St. Eunan’s forward knows that Down will be a massive test but says the county is in a good place and preparations have gone well in recent weeks. Speaking with Tom Comack, Conall added that its summer football in the Championship that the players will be judged on…….
 

Rory Kavanagh is back in the Donegal Squad for the Championship having missed the League Campaign due to travel commitments. Last years captain may start at midfield alongside Neill Gallagher. Rory has scored against Down in the championship before. That was his game winning goal four years ago…
 

Barry Dunnion has been dogged with injury problems for the last couple years but the Four Masters man is fully fit and available for selection. Since the league defeat to Armagh, Talking to Chris Mc Nulty, Barry says preparations have been going well…
 

Eamon Mc Gee is another player returning to the squad for the 2010 Championship. The Gweedore man had decided to take a break for a year and move to London but after speaking to the Manager and his clubmate Kevin Cassidy, Eamon decided the temptation of championship football was enough to return and give summer action another go…

Children in Derry have been warned by Sinn Fein not to get mixed up in so-called recreational rioting this summer.

Previous holiday periods and marching seasons have been marred by violence at interface areas on both sides of the city.

Brandywell councillor Patricia Logue has appealed to parents in Derry to ensure their children don’t get involved in rioting this summer.

 

Athletics – Smyth’s Double Win In Manchester

Derry sprinter Jason Smyth clinched a double win at the Paralympic World Cup meeting in Manchester on Tuesday. The Eglinton man won the 100metres in 10.66 seconds and also took victory in the 200m with a 22.07 time. The visually-impaired Derry man has been training in Florida USA for the last five months alongside American sprinting star Tyson Gay. The 22-year-old is making an impact in able-bodied athletics and he has already qualified for this year’s European Championships in Barcelona
