Man shot in both legs in Strabane

A man has been shot in both legs in Strabane.

Four men went into a house at Lisnafin Park at 11 o’clock last night. They forced the 24-year-old man into the garden, where the shooting took place.

The man is currently being treated in hospital.

Meanwhile, two houses were evacuated in the early hours after an oil tank was set ablaze in the Ballycoleman area.

50 Donegal schools included in summer works’ scheme

1,480 primary and secondary schools across the country will benefit from small and medium scale building works this summer, 50 of them in Donegal.

It follows confirmation of this year’s Summer Works Scheme, with a €122m investment confirmed by Tanaiste and Education Minister Mary Coughlan,

The scheme covers electrical and mechanical works, roof replacements and repairs, window replacement, toilet upgrades, structural improvements and access works.

Senator Cecillia Keaveney says an important spin off from the programme is that local jobs will be created as a result of the scheme.

 

Decision on Lifford and Ballyshannon community hospitals by ‘early summer’

The HSE’s Local Health Manager for Donegal says decisions will be made on the future of Community Hospital Services in the county by the early summer.

John Hayes was responding to ongoing fears about the future of Lifford Community Hospital, and The Rock in Ballyshannon, both of which are believed to be facing closure as part of an ongoing review.

Speaking after a meeting with unions this morning, Mr Hayes told Highland Radio News that while no decisions have been made, there are serious challenges underpinning the review.

 

Health Minister stands by Sligo General cancer services decision

Health Minister Mary Harney says she doesn’t believe the decision to withdraw cancer services from Sligo General Hospital will be reversed in the future, no matter who is in the role.

Ms Harney was speaking at Letterkenny General Hospital, where she launched the Sexual Assault Treatment Units’ Annual Report for 2009.

Asked about cancer services in Sligo and South Donegal, Ms Harney said she is satisfied with the decisions taken regarding services in the North West, and praised the level of service being provided at Letterkenny General Hospital:

 

Councillor Jim Lynch rejects resigning speculation

Letterkenny’s Mayor has denied suggestions that he may resign when his term in the chair ends in the summer, and seek to have a family member coopted onto Letterkenny Town Council in his place.

Cllr Jim Lynch says he has served as a councillor for over 25 years, and claims that he may resign from the council imply that he only stayed in the council so that he could become the mayor.

He says this is totally inaccurate.

Major improvement in Donegal sexual assault treatment services

It has been claimed that sexual assault treatment services in Donegal are now on a par with the rest of the country.

That is according to Dr Maeve Eogan, the Medical Director of the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit in Rotunda Hospital.

Previously a victim of a sexual assault could be forced to face a round trip to Dublin for treatment; however staffing levels have now been boosted at the treatment unit in Letterkenny offering a full service.

Government accused of abusing partition on VRT issue

The Irish Government has been accused of abusing partition in applying Vehicle Registration Tax to cars imported from the north to the south.

Foyle MLA Martina Anderson says she has been inundated with calls from people angry at the VRT charge and a perceived local crack down though a series of customs checkpoints.

Ms Anderson says that Sinn Fein MEP’s are trying to ascertain if the VRT is illegal:

Communities urged to become involved in planning for Peace 3

Community groups in Donegal are being urged to attend consultation meetings on the second phase of the Peace 3 programme, which get underway in Letterkenny tomorrow.

Over 4 million euro was spent in Donegal during the last phase of the programme, and the county’s Peace Three Partnership is urging groups to become involved now so the yield from the latest phase can be maximised.

The chair of the partnership is Cllr Dessie Larkin………..

 

GAA – Donegal into U21 All Ireland Final

Donegal 0-12 v Tipperary 0-4

Michael Murphy scored 0-6 and caused endless problems for the Tipperary defence as Donegal booked their place in the All-Ireland U21FC final at Parnell Park on Saturday Night. First-time Munster champions Tipperary’s hopes suffered a huge blow when their captain Ciaran McDonald was sent off two minutes after the restart for his second bookable offence on the big Donegal full forward. Thereafter, Jim McGuinness’ charges made the most of their numerical advantage to pull away for what was a comfortable victory in the end. Match of the Match was Kilcar’s Mark Mc Hugh. Donegal will play Dublin in the final after the Dubs beat Roscommon in the other semi.
