Call for safety review on Letterkenny’s Circular Road

Safety on the Circular Road needs to be urgently addressed according to Letterkenny councillor Jimmy Kavanagh.

He says following a serious accident on Saturday evening, in which a pedestrian was knocked down, it is time to urgently address the issue of safety on what is one of Letterkenny’s busiest roads.

Cllr Kavanagh says Saturday night’s incident was the second accident in just over a week on the same stretch of road, which has a huge volume of traffic and is prone to speeding.

He now wants the current safety measures on the road to be reassessed.

Judge claims his sentencing powers are outdated

A District Judge has described his sentencing powers for assaults as ‘hopelessly outdated as he jailed a man for three months for two assaults on paramedics and one on a police officer.

Damien Murphy (26) of Knockalla Park in Derry was charged with two assaults, one assault on police and disorderly behaviour that occurred on August 19.
The court heard that police were called to a stabbing incident and found Murphy with a wound to his leg being treated by paramedics. While police were talkimg to another man there was a disturbance from the back of the ambulance and a paramedic said that Murphy had assaulted him.

Police then escorted Murphy to the hospital but he spat at another paramedic. While being treated he continued to be abusive and threw a blood stained blanket at a police officer and punched him on the chin.

A defence solicitor, Mr. Paddy McGurk, said his client had no recollection of what had happened. He said that Murphy had been off drink for a few months but went out to celebrate his girlfriend becoming pregnant.

He said that he could not recall how he came to be stabbed and did not know who he was lashing out at.
District Judge Mr. Barney McElholm said that attacks on medical personnel would not be tolerated.

He said that Murphy had shown no remorse and had even turned up to court on Wednesday drunk and left before he could be sentenced.

Murphy was sentenced to three months in prison.

Councillor says too much work is done behind closed doors

A Donegal County Councillor says that too much of the local authority’s business is conducted behind closed.

Councillor Patrick McGowen says that all too often when an issue is raised in the chamber, rather than discuss it their and then, it is put off to a workshop. These are often held behind closed doors and in the absence of the local media.

Councillor McGowen says this is undemocratic and change is needed.

Farmers should withdraw cattle from processors

The ICSA is urging Donegal farmers to withhold their cattle for slaughter, in protest at the price being paid for their animals by processors.

Outgoing President Malcolm Thompson says the price being paid to farmers now is below break even point, and well below what is being paid in the UK and Europe.

He says that farmers are using other payments they receive to prop up the beef industry here, and that needs to stop.

Council outlines timetable for Milford works

Donegal County Council has confirmed that a contractor has been appointed to carry out improvement works in Milford, with the works set to be finished by mid-summer. A new road will be built parallel to the Main Street, allowing for the development of a one way system.

The commitment was given today during a meeting with a number of local business people.

One of them, Pharmacist Mark Mc Cormick, says while the works may cause some short term inconvenience, they will reap important benefits in the long term.

He says the work will begin in mid-February, with completion by mid-july.
